The Eastern Massachusetts Abortion (EMA) Fund works to reduce social and economic barriers to abortion care and bodily autonomy through movement building, advocacy, education, and direct aid.

We envision a world where every person has the right to bodily self-determination, where every person has the right to determine their own future.

Our Purpose

The EMA Fund's goal is to make abortion accessible to all who need it.

We believe that access to abortion and bodily autonomy is a matter of reproductive and racial justice, and a human right. To achieve our purpose, we: allocate funds equitably to ensure that people without adequate resources can have safe and timely abortions and reproductive care; eliminate barriers such as language, transportation, and lodging; assist eligible callers to the EMA Fund in obtaining MassHealth (Medicaid) coverage; and collaborate with health care providers, grassroots organizers, activists, and other local and national funds.

The following values guide all fundraising, programmatic, and organizational decisions and actions for the EMA Fund:

About the EMA Fund

  • An abortion fund is a non-profit organization that redistributes money to patients who otherwise wouldn’t be able to financially afford their abortion care. The first abortion fund in the US was the Chicago Abortion Fund, founded in 1985 by a group of black feminists. At EMA, our work includes funding for wraparound support that a patient might need– a ride to and from the clinic, transportation to Massachusetts from an abortion ban state, and assistance with childcare and meal costs. Our patients aren’t required to justify their financial need.

  • Massachusetts has taken legislative and legal steps to protect abortion providers, funders and seekers, and yes, MassHealth covers abortion care! But our patients' specific circumstances often prevent them from being able to afford their care. High deductibles, insurance exemptions for abortion care (especially for patients on Medicaid), out-of-state patients who aren’t eligible for MassHealth, people between insurance coverages– all of these are reasons a client might not be able to use insurance. Additionally, patients sometimes have confidentiality concerns about using their insurance because they don’t want a partner, parent or guardian to know about their abortion.

  • Abortion care costs vary widely depending on the type of abortion sought and how far along a pregnancy has advanced. For clients seeking medication abortion (available under 12 weeks), the cost varies between $150-700 for the abortion pills. In-clinic procedural abortions under 12 weeks cost between $450-800. From 12-20 weeks, abortions typically cost upwards of $1000, with the cost rising to tens of thousands of dollars for care after 20 weeks, which is often sought due to serious medical risk. Costs can also depend on insurance coverage and many insurers don’t cover care past 20 weeks at all.

  • The EMA Fund was founded to support residents of eastern Massachusetts. Today, we are able to fund any resident of Massachusetts or anyone traveling to Massachusetts for care.
