For people seeking abortion care
“I know I need funding for abortion care, but I don’t have an appointment yet. Can EMA help me make one?” Unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to assist with making appointments: callers must have a scheduled appointment with a clinic or telehealth service before we are able to pledge funding. We have funding arrangements with most clinics and telehealth services operating in Massachusetts, as well as with many hospitals in the Greater Boston area.
“I’m under 18– can EMA help me?” In Massachusetts, anyone 16 years or older can access abortion care without the consent of a parent or guardian. For those under 16 who do not have a parent or guardian they can confide in, there is a judicial bypass process– you file a petition with the court seeking approval to access abortion care without guardian consent. Typically, all judicial bypass cases in Massachusetts courts are approved. Planned Parenthood Massachusetts Patient Navigators can assist you with seeking a judicial bypass. EMA is happy to fund patients who received judicial bypasses once their appointment is scheduled.
Frequently Asked Questions
“What information will I need to give EMA in order to get funded?” EMA collects minimal client information to protect patient privacy. When you complete your funding intake, you’ll be asked for your first name, last initial, and the date and month of your birthday. We’ll also need the location of your appointment and the date of the appointment and to know about any practical support you need- like a ride to your appointment. We will never ask you for identifying information like a photo ID, your immigration status, or your home address.
“Does the EMA Fund provide anything other than abortion funding?” Yes! In addition to funding the direct cost of abortion care, the EMA Fund also provides wrap-around practical support by paying for Lyft rides to and from in-clinic appointments, coordinating transportation like booking flights and hotel stays, and helping to fund other care needs like childcare and nourishing meals. We also offer to connect callers with abortion doulas who can offer logistical and emotional support if they choose.
“I’m helping someone else seek abortion funding– is that okay?” Yes! You can definitely assist a loved one with completing their funding intake form, and we’re happy to work with support people to make sure a client’s needs are met. Our hotline is available in English and Spanish, and we have a translation line for anyone who doesn’t speak those languages. We also work with social workers and attorneys to assist clients who are in jail or prison.
